Lead quality over lead quantity is the oldest advice in commercial medicine and it is still the advice most practices ignore, because volume is measurable on a Monday and quality is measurable in a quarter.

Worth watching next to our own funnel, which asks two questions and then tells a share of the people who answer them that we are not the right call. That costs us leads on purpose. This episode is the argument for why.

Why volume wins the argument it should lose

The reason practices keep choosing quantity is not stupidity, it is the measurement gap. A lead count is visible today, sitting in a dashboard, easy to celebrate and easy to demand more of. Lead quality only resolves over a quarter — in show rates, in whether the booked patient was ever a candidate, in whether they were happy at the end. So the metric that is easy to see drives the behaviour, and the metric that actually matters arrives too late to correct it. A practice can be busy and losing money on acquisition at the same time, and the dashboard will look healthy the entire way down.

The method the episode proposes lives or dies on one detail: what you say to the wrong prospect. A qualification step with no answer for the person it should turn away is not a filter — it is a slower intake with extra steps. The useful version tells the unsuited person something true and lets them go, which feels like losing a lead and is actually declining a refund, a bad review, and a chair-hour spent on somebody who was never going to be helped.

The same discipline, upstream

For a practice evaluating supply, the equivalent move is refusing to be sold on volume — the biggest order, the deepest discount, the fastest onboarding — and asking instead what arrives with the material and what you are permitted to claim about it. A supplier optimising your lead count is optimising the wrong number for you, in exactly the way this episode warns about, one layer up the chain.

What to watch for

  • What he proposes you say to the wrong prospect. A method that has no answer for that is a filtering method with no filter.

Rather just ask someone?

Two questions and you will know whether this is a conversation worth having. If it is not, we would rather tell you that than take your details.
